Our social media profiles speak volumes about who you are. A viewer want to know if he needs to turn down the ‘gayness’ of his profile picture. He is aware that his personal presentation on social media which could be sending the ‘wrong’ message to a potential employer.

Anyone wanting to advance our career or social life, paying attention to what our social media is saying is critical to our success. It’s difficult to fly under the digital radar. If you think for a second that employers aren’t plugging your happy-ass into Google when thinking of potentially employing you, you’re mistaken. They want to know what they’re bringing into their corporate culture. You are going to be representation of their brand. The pictures you post, topics you like, and the topics you discuss are all on display. Even if your privacy is on lock-down, you really shouldn’t take the chance.

Image is not just when you meet someone but also your online presence. It’s a collective whole of how you are perceived. Don’t have a momentary lapse of judgement that can come back and bite you in the ass. We have lost anonymity and privacy with the technological advancements. The more social you are, the more you have planted a social media landmine. Your image needs to be consistent from in-person to online.

So, should you tone down your ‘gayness’? There are certain things we can’t change: age, height, skin color, race. But otherwise, you need to be true to yourself and be okay with what you have presented. There are risks, and if you are concerned with potential employers, err on the side of caution.
