When to Stretch | Warming Up and Cooling Down

June 4, 2012
Aaron Marino of alpha m. addresses when you should stretch. When should you stretch pre or post workout? Should you stretch differently for cardio versus weight training?

Stretching is very important for the function of your body. However, stretching can increase risk of injury if performed before weight training by being too warmed-up.

  • With weight training, use the actual exercise (move) to get the range-of-motion and warm-up the body. Aaron’s first set of any exercise is a lighter set. When the workout ends, Aaron stretches to make sure he’s nice and loose.
  • Before he goes out to run, he stretches and limbers-up. When he starts his run, the first mile is a bit slower. As he gets going, he increases speed. After cardio, deep breathe and stretch. Overall, stretching and being limber is incredibly vital to your success.
