Aaron Marino of alpha m. explains why you can consume protein powder on days you don’t workout.

Your muscles need amino acids to rebuild from working-out, so you can take a scoop after you workout. You can also use protein powder as a meal replacement, when you are on the run, or when traveling.

You can’t rely on them for the bulk of your calories, however. On your days off, your muscle fibers haven’t rebuilt 100% so they still need the amino acids to rebuild bigger and stronger. You are doing yourself just as much good as days you workout when you consume protein powder.
