Men's Flip Flops

August 7, 2012
There’s nothing like getting heavy, cold weather clothes off our backs once the hot days of summer roll in.  Summer clothes not only look great and are fun to wear, but they keep us comfortable and cool.

Ok, got it, but what about keeping our feet cool?  Are they given the same privilege of fresh air and sunshine other body parts get, or do they stay locked away in a pair of hot, dark shoes all summer long?  Summer footwear is not a place every man feels comfortable going, and often feels the need to wear sneakers and other closed shoes for fear of being caught in “mandals”.  Well, I can’t say that I blame them with some of the questionable sandals I’ve seen, but for those feet screaming for summer freedom, you may want to consider wearing my favorite warm weather footwear – the flip flop.

A flip flop or thong is a rubber sandal loosely fastened to the foot by a thong, according to the dictionary.  I’m sure you’ve all seen them, but have you seen the multitude of styles and features now available?  Today’s flip flops are not your grandmother’s brightly colored, dime store variety sandal anymore.  Of course, they can be if you like, but with so many varieties of men’s thongs on the market, we have countless options to choose from: casual and functional to upscale and sheik.  Finding a pair or two shouldn’t be difficult, and once you get used to the thong being in between your toes, they will probably be your go-to pair of summer peds, too.

Men’s flip flops are so popular now and manufacturers make so many styles that there’s something for everyone.  From canvas, nylon and leather straps, to plastic, leather and cork soles – flip flops are designed for all types of activities and lifestyles.  Wearing them to the beach?  Try a pair with quick drying nylon straps.  Want a pair to wear on a movie date?  Leather soles add a touch of sophistication.  Seriously, you can’t flop with flip flops!

Like everything else in our wardrobe, flip flops do have guidelines and rules to be worn by.  Actually, whether it’s flip flops or any other sandal, follow these “dos and don’ts” to be sure you’re looking as cool as your feet feel.

Flip Flop Must-Dos

  • Make sure your feet are clean and smell clean.  There’s no hiding behind the confines of a shoe, so make sure your feet represent.
  • Cut your toenails and keep them short!  Nothing’s scarier than dagger like toenails protruding like weapons over the front of a sandal.  You know what I’m talkin about!
  • Address any athlete’s foot or nail fungus, preferably before it’s time to do the unveiling, since these issues take time to clear up.  Plan ahead and give your feet several months notice to get in shape by dealing with fungus during the winter months.  If you’re unsure of how to treat fungus or any other foot problem, a family doctor or podiatrist (foot doctor) are the doctors to see.  If you’re caught short on time, you might want to reconsider wearing sandals until next year when feet look better.  Or, choose a pair of closed-toe sandals that can mask problems.
  • If you need arch support, don’t let that keep you from wearing flip flops.  Many brands offer substantial arch support that holds up well.  In addition, various types of foot beds offer extra cushioning if needed.
  • Wear flip flops or sandals with shorts, jeans, bathing suits, khakis and chinos.  Like shoes, some styles are dressier than others, so choose a nice, classy leather pair when wearing with chinos or going out on the town; particularly in the evening.
  • If you’re going to wear a leather belt with leather flip flops, make sure their color and style match.

Flip Flop Don’ts

  • Never wear socks with thongs or sandals.  Yes, it does happen… we’ve all seen it!  It doesn’t matter what color the socks are, the two should never ever be seen together!
  • There is never an acceptable time to wear any sort of sandal with dress pants, no matter how casually you’re dressed.  I’m sure I don’t have to mention this includes suits, too!
  • Unless you work as a lifeguard, never wear sandals to work.

Now that you know all about flip-flop etiquette, let’s take a look at some of the many  styles walking around today.  These are just a small sample of what’s available, so if you don’t see a pair you like, check out the selection online.

If you’ve never tried a pair of flip flops, give them a shot.  You’ll not only look care-free and fashion forward, but your feet will think they’re on vacation!
