Alpha M. Fitness Success | How Andrew Did It

May 4, 2012
Aaron Marino of alpha m. sends congrats to Andrew!  Alpha devised a fitness program for Andrew, and Andrew took his advice. Alpha is so thrilled with this success story and is pumped about Andrew’s progress.

Here’s how Andrew has stuck to the program and pushed through bad days.

Hey Aaron,

As you suggested I have stuck with my nutrition and training program we discussed on the phone and continued to see results. My weight on the scale has basically stayed the same for about 3-4 weeks now as I approach the end of the 6 week mark. I took my body fat measurement with calipers. I think I did it correctly lol. If so it was saying around 12.7 %. That was last week. I haven’t measured since. Anyways, I’m feeling and seeing results. They are slow but steady.

I’m doing so many things I have never done to ensure I give myself every chance of success and right the wrongs of my past attempts. My motivation is high.
I have implemented the following things you suggest on your site-

  • Drink lots of water
  • L-Carnitine
  • Good Multi
  • High protein
  • Nutrition
  • Almonds and healthy fats
  • Target heart rate training- Which for me would be 114-142 which seems way to easy to be effective. I was jogging for a while and got a heart rate monitor and found out I had regularly been going in the 160’s for the first several weeks! Apparently I cant jog, even at a slow pace to be in my target hr.
  • Training chest with flys as my primary chest workout- never have I seen such quick gains. With my long arms, I dont think I ever quite hit my chest right.
  • Most importantly-using less weight and focusing on the muscle being targeted
  • Cut out bad starchy carbs
  • Limit my workouts to 45 min or less, not including cardio.
  • Listen to my body

And many others. Most of these things I had heard before but never truly taken to heart. I kinda just worked out hard, had protein and hoped for the best. I attribute much of my progress and success thus far to you for helping to motivate me and this alpha M community. It makes me feel as though I have some accountability. And all the valuable info I have gotten from you and your videos about all these little things in life guys wonder about but don’t know who to ask or are too embarrassed to.

Lastly, I am very dedicated to my goal of constantly improving and being consistent in achieving and maintaining my best body. In the past I would be rolling and doing great and some life event would inevitably happen. Something with my job, school, schedule-what have you would happen and derail me. I would get depressed or just not have the energy to bother. My goals weren’t strong enough and I would just give up.

This time around I knew in advance my tendencies in the past. I prepared for it mentally. The whole point of this current goal and adventure I’m on is to prove to myself that it can be done. To change what needs to be changed. To not repeat the past mistakes. No matter what happens in life right now, I want to continue to strive to reach my goals and be consistent.

My wife just lost her job. Finances are going to be tight. On the same day, some things went down at my workplace that bummed me out majorly. I came home, extremely low energy (low carb diet now for several weeks)- I felt that same feeling in my mind “Just give up. All this bad stuff has just happened. You should just relax and rest and watch tv.”

The same mental thoughts began to creep up that have before. My ideal environment for working out and my schedule and everything that were perfectly in place and I had been following were suddenly altered. My mind was full of so many negative thoughts I couldn’t focus. My desire and drive were gone. Everything was replaced with worry and how life was going to change for us. So much of my energy being poured into my wife to uplift her. Thoughts of debt creeping in.

Despite all of that, I looked in the mirror. I saw how far I have come. Way too far to quit. I like this lifestyle. I like improving myself daily. It may be an uphill climb but its (one day at a time). I was just a thought away from taking an “off day”. Which is another way of saying falling into the same pit of past events creeping up in life and derailing me. I knew this moment was more important than ever to keep moving forward.

So I did. It wasn’t the best workout, and It wasn’t my most enthusiastic cardio session. But I did it, and I’m still moving forward.

Ok, off my Dr.Phil soapbox and back to nutrition and diet. I know I either need to decrease calories somewhere or up the cardio. The only calories however I can see cutting back on are almonds. I eat probably one too many a day. I probably have 4 hand fulls a day. As far as cardio, I do 30 minute sessions after my workouts 4 days a week. The two days I don’t workout I do 45 min. And then one day is taken off completely. Any suggestions or should I go another two weeks the same and see what happens? I mean I seem to be continuing to lean out but at a much slower rate now. Btw, I have put on considerable size in my chest and back in such a short amount of time. I think my body is catching up to my better training and diet. Being tall, working out my back has always been an issue and tough to get pumped. I started doing wide grip pullups with only negatives(all i can do) assisted by my foot on a bench and wow! I tore it up. I think the mass in my lats doubled in two weeks! I can feel it! Anyways, I’m also taking pictures as you suggested. Maybe Ill share them when I feel I have reached my first goal. In 6 short weeks however, my body has already made a drastic transformation thanks to you and this community.

Take care.
