The Art of Complimenting
A viewer never developed friends during school and now that he’s out of school, he has no one to hang-out with. He wants to develop new friendships. This challenge effects everyone at one time or another– those who are going off to college, after a break-up or divorce, and more. To develop a social circle, Aaron Marino of alpha m. suggests:
- Get ready to be uncomfortable– push yourself out of your personal boundaries.
- It’s time to get social online– become an online social butterfly. Visit meetup.com or citysearch.com. Alpha personally recommends picking one or two things to do each week.
- Become a social butterfly in-person: join a new gym / church / sports league, volunteer, or get part-time job at a cool place that puts you around your *peers*. The key is to meet new people- get out there
- Talk to everybody– initiate small talk and use the art of complimenting (see links above)
- Accept every invitation that comes your way– friends have other friends that you may hit it off. Expand your social circle.
You have to engage people with more than a simple, “Hey, how are you doing!” That’s going no where. You need to add questions such as, “What do you have going on this weekend?” This dialogue will propel you to the next level. But don’t rush friendships. Most importantly, bring something to the table– so be positive, happy, and engaging. Friendships can be tough to develop, but getting out of your comfort zone is the key to developing solid friendships.
