Professional male style expert and image consultant, Aaron Marino, talks about how to buy the perfect fitting shirt. Regardless of your body shape, fitted shirts look best on most everybody due to less fabric in the body of shirt. You look taller and leaner. Here’s how to buy the perfect fitting shirt:
When you are buying a dress shirt, there are two measurements that really matter: neck and arm length. How do you get the measurements? Get an associate in the store to measure you.
- Get a neck measurement, which gives you two fingers of room. If you can fist an entire fist, it’s too big. If it’s strangling you, it’s too small. Collars come in half sizes too. If you have a neck larger than 20, you are a bull! You will have to go somewhere special rather than off the rack.
- The arm is another important measurement. Arm to side, you want 1/2 to an inch between big knuckle on your thumb and shirt. If you see your whole hand, it’s too short. Then hold your arm straight out in front of you, if you see entire hand, it’s proper length. If you see your wrist, it’s too short. If you don’t see your hand, it’s too long.
When you go to the rack, find your size. Typically these shirts will be in wrappers. If you are trying a new size or brand, unpin and try it on. Later you can go in and buy without trying on. You need to look at the tag and confirm the size. If you go to Express, you’ll see a neck size but no arm length. Typically the neck size correlates with an overall size. Express makes the proportionate.
