74% people suffer from speech anxiety. Aaron Marino of alpha m says there is no more terrifying speech to give than a toast. Presentations at work can be tough but you know everyone in the room and have props (slideshows, graphs, PowerPoint) to keep you on track. Toasts are a totally different ballgame with the chance to screw up royally going up exponentially if you’ve been drinking heavily, are super nervous, or are not prepared.
Basics and Fundamentals for Giving a Dynamic Toast
- Remember why you are there – don’t toot your own horn
- Keep it short and sweet – 3 minutes is your goal
- Embarrassing is not the same thing as funny – context is king
- Pick one story about that person
- Write it down and rehearse – don’t practice in front of a mirror
- Don’t get intoxicated before the toast – definitely no more than two drinks
