Communication includes technological communication. Aaron Marino of alpha m. covers how to email like a gentleman. Alpha discusses grammar and punctuation and how society has not been using them lately.
In regard to friends and family that love you, neglecting the formality of grammar, capitalization, and punctuation is forgivable. However, you need to be able to flip the switch when communicating with business and anything other than personal pleasure. Your email can set you apart from your competition so basic email etiquette is critical to your success.
Email Etiquette Basics
- Know your audience – an email sent to your mother is different than an email to your boss, potential boss, or coworker.
- Don’t mix professional and personal emails – keep stratospheres apart!
- Keep emails short, sweet, and concise – time is money!
- Don’t sit bricks or blocks of texts
- Send clear and direct subject line
- Use real words not abbreviations or emoticons (never!)
- Don’t use all caps or use more than one exclamation point
- Use bcc instead of cc – to keep anonymity
- Create and use signature on emails
- Proof read each and every email
- Respond to emails in reasonable fashion – 48 hours before following up
