Cotton Neckties

February 28, 2013
Here comes spring – a fresh new season that opens the door to warm weather clothing! And while you’re busy switching out your winter wardrobe with lightweight spring and summer garb, don’t forget the cotton ties.

Cotton neckties, although worn year round, take center stage once temperatures begin to climb. Cotton’s versatile and prized qualities make it the perfect warm weather fabric. Lightweight with exceptional breathability, cotton has been used in tie making for centuries, and is still valued in modern times for the same reasons. Comfortable, soft, and absorbent, cotton neckties not only compliment summer suits and other warm weather clothing, but they help to keep us cool when Mother Nature has other ideas.

Traditionally, cotton neckties have been limited to light colors, due to cotton’s color retaining properties, but today’s advanced manufacturing enables cotton neckties to come in every color of the color wheel, no matter how bright or bold. Patterns know no bounds either, and cotton ties can be found with some of the wildest and fun patterns available.

Cotton ties have the reputation of being casual, but this no longer applies, since these ties, when made with “mercerized” cotton, offer a sheen that rivals silk and is worthy of dress suits and formal business attire. Still, there are scores of casual cotton ties available, which always look great with khakis, jeans, and business casual apparel. Regardless, cotton ties are more versatile than ever; making them a popular choice worldwide.

Like other types of neckties, cotton ties have their disadvantages, too. Known to stretch and lose shape; cotton fabric does not have a “memory”. Heavier weight cotton ties have a better chance of retaining their shape, as do those with an interface lining, yet either can wrinkle very easily. Since cotton fabric is notorious for wrinkling, many designers now offer cotton blend neckties that still provide most of cotton’s valued comfort, without the hassle of wrinkles.

Cotton can also fade quickly, so neckties should never be stored in bright light, but instead, hung in closets or rolled and stored away when not worn. They also show wear and tear easily, which can be offset by giving them the TLC they deserve through proper maintenance. They should always be dry cleaned and pressed by a professional only when necessary, which will preserve the fabric’s integrity. Resist the temptation to wash cotton ties in water, since wetting will cause them to shrink and misshapen. Pressing with a hot iron is risky, since heat and moisture will distort the tie. Hanging a cotton tie in a steamy bathroom to reduce wrinkles is acceptable as a do-it-yourself home remedy, but be careful not to pull on it (too hard), or it will stretch out of shape.

Not all cotton neckties are created equal. Less expensive ties are often found without interfacing – the additional fabric that’s found on the inside of the tie. The purpose of the interfacing is to give more support to the tie fabric, which enables the tie to retain its shape better and produce a more substantial knot. Often, cotton ties have a very stiff interfacing that makes them rigid and more difficult to tie. Trouble lying flat against the neck is another problem associated with stiff linings, so pay attention to the interfacing and choose ties with soft, pliable linings for performance and comfort. Regardless of the type interfacing used, it must be attached to the tie properly. If it’s only tacked or sparsely sewn to the tie shell, chances are it will eventually twist, bringing the tie with it.

How much do cotton neckties cost? Well, that depends on where you shop and which designer, if any, you prefer. I’ve seen prices as low as $10 and as high as $200+ for both pure cotton and cotton blend ties. Thrift stores are a great place to look for bargains, as is the internet, so check around.

Cotton neckties have a lot to offer. Don’t let what seems like high-maintenance turn you away from a great warm weather accessory. They address both esthetics and comfort, while offering versatility and fun. So, discover the world of cotton neckties this spring!
