Men's Boot Styles

December 6, 2012
It’s hard to believe it’s December already. Cold weather always turns my thoughts to winter garb, and today is no different as I notice how cold my feet are. Sure, I could have been practical and grabbed a thick pair of socks, but, instead, my thoughts went straight to BOOTS! Yes, cold weather and boots make the perfect match, so now’s the time for all boot-lovin men to knock off the dirt and bring those ever-lovin boots to life.

Many boots, like work boots and ankle boots, are worn year round, while others are seasonal and only worn during colder months. I realize trends have opened the door to certain boots being worn with shorts, but for the most part, I think we can agree that boots work best with pants and cooler weather – if for no other reason than comfort. However, there are a lot more reasons beyond temperature to wear boots, and I know, as men, you all know that. Boots, like no other footwear, seem very masculine and rugged, and have a way of connecting us to our macho roots. That may sound strange, but I do know they feel good to wear; beyond just foot comfort. But, for now, I’ll stick to the reason you’re reading this article and mention the other reasons we love our boots so much… fashion and style!

It’s true; boots make a huge fashion statement and reveal our sense of style. They look great with most everything, and come in enough styles to compliment every long pant outfit – even suits. Women have told me men’s boots are sexy and give a guy an edge… which sound like two excellent reasons to wear them!

BOOT STYLES

Work Boots:  Rugged and durable, these boots are designed for the guy who gets his hands dirty, or should I say feet? These brawny boots come in various heights, from ankle to mid-calf, with most being lace-ups; however, some brands offer slip-on varieties. Typically made of leather or nubuck, these boots are comfortable, breathable, usually waterproof, and have the option of steel or soft toe. Soles, too, are durable and should provide sufficient cushioning and shock absorption to ease the stress on feet, legs, and backs. Normal colors include yellow, tan, all shades of brown, green, and black. You won’t want to skimp on quality or cost if you’ll be standing half the day in work boots.

Winter Boots:  If you live in a part of the world that gets snow, you most likely have a pair of winter boots. Although there are some great looking winter boots available, functionality is most important here. Winter boots are constructed for… you guessed it – winter. The better manufacturers offer various levels of insulation and protection from the cold, so quality matters when choosing a winter or snow boot, especially if you have to wear them often or for long periods. Construction ranges from leather and suede to manmade materials that offer water protection, as well. One thing most winter boots have in common is the outer sole. It’s usually made from some type of rubber or plastic, whose purpose it to provide water protection and traction in the snow, much like snow tires. When buying this boot, you might consider choosing a larger size than you actually take. The idea in wearing oversized winter boots is to accommodate several pairs of socks, which help to keep feet as warm as possible.

Hiking Boots:  This boot resembles work boots in general; however, they are designed much differently. Their purpose is to provide the hiker with support throughout the foot and ankle, provide a sturdy, non-slip sole, supply adequate cushioning for comfort, protect the foot from the elements, plus be lightweight, so not to slow the hiker down. Definitely the best choice for hikers.

Hunting Boots:  Hunting boots closely resemble work boots, but typically aren’t built quite as well. Constructed of leather, fabric, or rubber, most hunting boots don’t offer a steel toe, but are usually waterproof, insulated, and very sturdy, in order to keep up with the challenging weather and terrain conditions hunters encounter. Quality plays a big role here, too, so go with a top manufacturer for the best boot experience.

Military Boots:  Designed to handle most conditions, these boots are tough, in order to withstand harsh military demands. They also come in various heights, and are typically made of black leather; however, some combat boots are constructed with canvass, nylon, or suede sections in addition to leather. You can understand why military boots are designed to have good ventilation. If hot, sweaty feet are a problem when wearing boots, consider getting a pair of these – although they should only be worn with jeans, cargo pants, and military fatigues. You can expect to have these original boots resoled several times before the uppers wear out. Many of today’s military boots are intended for civilian fashion wear, and vary in construction and style from authentic combat boots, so features and qualities vary.

Western Boots:  Better known as “cowboy” boots, this style is synonymous with the American Cowboy. Designed to keep up with a cowboy’s active lifestyle, these boots are still worn today… even though most wearers don’t own a horse. Once a popular trend, many guys still wear western boots, which are typically made of sturdy leather that’s either plain or ornate. I’ve seen some that are literally a work of art. Still, I’m only a fan of them being worn with jeans or casual pants and NEVER with a suit. However, if you must wear them with dress slacks or suits, be sure they compliment your outfit, like you would with other dress shoes and boots. Ankle varieties are a nice option with dress pants.

Ankle Boots:  The name is self-explanatory – the top of the boot lands at the ankle. Countless styles, from casual to dressy, can be found in this comfortable boot style. They can be worn year round, since they aren’t as warm as higher boots, and they can be worn with most outfits, provided they match its theme – casual or dressy.

Dress Boots:  The sky’s the limit when it comes to the vast assortment of dress boots available today. Like dress shoes, they come in countless colors, styles, and qualities, with or without buckles, straps, and ornamentation. Many dress boots are ankle boots, but not all. Soles are often thicker than those on finer dress shoes, which lends to their diversity. They can be worn as a fashion statement, or because inclement weather warrants them. Normally made of leather, these boots can be worn with anything from jeans to suits. When worn with suits, keep them plain and simple versus flashy and ornate. So, if your wardrobe arsenal lacks dress boots, you might want to add a pair or two to this year’s fashion list. Don’t forget to look into the boot companies that have recently added dress boots to their selection.

No matter the type boot you wear, they all require regular upkeep and maintenance. Boots, like shoes, are expensive, so taking care of them will give you years of devoted service. Check out my article, Shine On!, for tips on keeping your boots looking as good as the day they were bought.
